History

Members with a similar interest in a new chapter met for brunch on January 25, 1986. At
that meeting, designated members explained various qualifications and individual
responsibilities necessary for the formation of a chapter. The response was overwhelmingly
positive, and members attending began to share their own ideas, hopes, and dreams for a

chapter in Eastern Jefferson County. Through this meeting and other contacts, twelve

other members decided to join the group.

In meetings that followed, the members labored to fulfill all the requirements to make their
dreams become a reality. It was thought that the group needed a sorority-related name, as

they had been approved as an interest group bearing all rights and privileges of such a

group. Thus, they became the “Alpha Jewels.” Danna Jones, new to Louisville for one year,

was elected as president, symbolizing a fresh start or a new beginning for the

local members.

The Alpha Jewels worked diligently on service projects, such as volunteering at the

Kentucky School for the Blind, donating to the Home for the Innocents, and giving birthday

parties for the residents of Mount Lebanon Nursing Home, and presenting a series of

seminars on major concerns of our community at the First Baptist Church of

Jeffersontown. Fundraisers included raffle tickets for a University of Louisville basketball

print, and a Derby Gala held at On Broadway Restaurant and Lounge.

The Alpha Jewels were chartered on June 28, 1986, at a beautiful, inspiring ceremony
conducted by the Central Regional Director, Mabel Cason. At that moment, the vision of the

five members who dared to dream and that of the other charter members wanting an

opportunity to serve became a reality. Pi Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha

Sorority, Incorporated® was formed.

Pi Lambda Omega Chapter has continued the journey to make Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated® supreme in “Service to All Mankind.” The chapter continues to be actively
involved in the numerous community programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life for

the citizens throughout the Louisville community. Since the chapter was

continue to grow in a positive light and continue to shine throughout our community. As

time continues to march on, the members of Pi Lambda Omega Chapter will continue to

carry out the goals and commitments of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®

with determination, dedication, and love.
