Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been dedicated to providing service to the community through a variety of programs for nearly 100 years.  Over the years, Pi Lambda Omega chapter has been active in the community in various ways, including:  assisting with educating youth on school subjects and life skills; educating the community on health issues; assisting underprivileged families with basic needs and recognizing accomplishments in the arts.  

The International Program theme for 2007 - 2010 is "The Heart of ESP: An Extraordinary Service Program".  This program focuses primarily on educating the community on economics, with a goal of developing economically empowered individuals who will have an understanding of how to survive and be economically successful in our ever-changing, global-economic world.  The international alumni chapter program involves the following platforms: 

  • Non-Traditional Entrepreneur                                                     

  • Economic Keys to Success

  • Economic Growth of the Black Family

  • Health Resource Management and Economics

Pi Lambda Omega develops a Program Calendar (calendar of events) each year which includes the service projects that adhere to national program platforms and other community service projects.  Below you will see some of the ways in which Pi Lambda Omega has implemented programs which serve our local community.

Scholarships

Each year, Pi Lambda Omega Chapter awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors who will be attending college the fall semester following graduation.  We are currently accepting applications for our 2008 scholarships.  Any interested high school senior may click here to download an application.  Applications must be postmarked by April 19, 2008 to be considered for award.

Pi Lambda Omega would like to thank the family of Wanda Borden and all individuals, groups and businesses who contribute to our scholarship fund through financial support of our Derby City Men Who Cook Gala and other chapter fundraisers. 

Habitat for Humanity                                                            Youth Financial Literacy Program

Pi Lambda Omega members participated in a Habitat for Humanity project by landscaping a home.

Pi Lambda Omega members educated youth about the benefits of financial planning.  Workshops included topics such as budgeting, investing, understanding paychecks, checkbook balancing, etc.

Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar                                 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Pi Lambda Omega hosts a series of programs annually to raise the level of health awareness within our community.  The Breast Cancer Awareness Forum was held in October in recognition of      Breast Cancer Month.

The MLK, Jr. Day of Service allows Pi Lambda Omega members and students of the community to come together and pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all who fought for civil rights through interactive learning activities.
